When I decided to transfer to RIT, the only thing I could think of was, "Oh my god, I can't believe I'm going to school in Rochester!" As a Rochestarian, born and raised, I could think of nothing worse than staying home for college. College is your first opportunity to get away from home; to go out and experience the world! Well, sometimes the experience you're looking for is right in your backyard. After getting over the shock of coming back to Rochester for school, I realized that while my house is only 25 minutes from campus, it might as well be on the other side of the country! Living on a college campus is akin to living in a bubble. I'm so busy and involved at school that I often don't even realize that I'm "home" until someone needs directions or brings up 'garbage plates' (more on that later).
However, I will say that being home has some unforeseen benefits. For example, tonight is opening night of my little brother's high school play and I get to see him perform! Two weeks ago, I was able to attend an award's ceremony honoring my mom (Educator of the Year, no big deal...). These are all important events that I would miss if I went to school hours away from here.
If I'm ever in the mood for something homemade, I can just go home for dinner, hug my mom and dad, and come back to school for the night. It really is a perfect arrangement. So, my advice for anyone in the Rochester area who is considering RIT, but hesitant because they don't want to stay in Rochester....come to RIT. The education you get here is unparalleled anywhere and you never even realize you're home. That is, until you need some gas money or chocolate chip cookies :)
