RIT welcomes international students as they bring a different perspective to the academic classroom as well as to the campus community.  Currently we have 1500 international students from 95 different countries.

The purpose of this blog is to give perspective international students in particular, an insiders view of the admissions process here at RIT.  This time of the year, we get a number of phone calls and e-mails from our international perspective students about the application process.  While for US students, the application process for one university to another is fairly similar, for an international applicant, it can be very different.  Multiply the different documents an international student needs to send by the number of schools he or she is applying to and that can be overwhelming!  To make the process a little easier, we have a dedicated web page for international applicants: http://www.rit.edu/emcs/admissions/international.

Lets break it down.  The application process for an international student applying to RIT is pretty simple.  Just like domestic students, you will need to fill out an application, typically online: https://futurestudent.rit.edu/ugrad/apply.cfm.  We will also need the applicant to submit a standardized test.  This is typically going to be the TOEFL exam although some students will also take IELTS, SATs, or ACTs.  We’ll of course need the student to send a transcript, or sometimes called a mark sheet in some countries, which will give us the student’s performance in their high school.  Some countries also require standardized subject testing of their students and these scores are helpful for admission review.

Finally, we will need a student to submit financial documents.  This isn’t for admission review, but is necessary for us to issue the right documents necessary for the student to enter the US.  Because it is usually easier, we typically have the student send these documents with the other application materials.

The process can take a while, from sending materials internationally, processing all the application materials, and doing the necessary steps needed to get a visa to study in the US.  We suggest that students begin the application early, and all materials be sent no later than March if they wish to in the fall.
